Malaysia to participate directly in next Sumud mission to Gaza—PM
According to reports, Anwar said the government "will be directly involved" in the Sumud 2.0 mission, which is expected to include participation from over 80 countries. He made the remarks on the social media platform Facebook during a meeting with Sumud Nusantara officials, including Command Center Director-General Sani Araby and founder Nadir Al-Nuri.
"We will mobilize all efforts to help and defend the rights of the Palestinian people. Justice can no longer be delayed, for the sake of a dignified and independent Palestine," he said.
Describing Malaysia’s involvement as part of a broader moral effort, Anwar stressed that it represents a commitment to justice and humanitarian principles that transcend borders, ethnicity, or religion. The “direct participation” in the mission, he said, is "a continuation of the international moral struggle which demands courage to uphold justice and humanitarian rights, regardless of borders, race or religion."
The announcement comes in the wake of previous Israeli attacks on Gaza-bound aid ships. In October, Israeli naval forces intercepted and seized more than 40 vessels carrying humanitarian aid, detaining over 450 activists. Many of those detained reported harsh treatment while in Israeli custody.
Israel has maintained a blockade of Gaza, which is home to nearly 2.4 million people, for almost 18 years. The siege was intensified in March when border crossings were closed and deliveries of food and medical supplies were blocked, worsening the humanitarian crisis.
Reports describe the conflict as an ongoing genocide in Gaza that began on Oct. 8, 2023, lasting two years until a ceasefire agreement took effect last October, temporarily halting the hostilities that claimed thousands of lives.
